If you are interested in seeing an energetic and fun dance group you should visit the Maliku traditional dancers. The group is located about a 45 minute drive outside Kitui town center, at a place called Maliku -hence the name of the group. It consists of 28 members, whereas four of them are male drummers.
The age span is from 50 till over 80, and they are led by one of the drummers. The drumbeats, lyrics and moves are found through the old fashion way; by dreaming. When the inspiration has come, he teaches it to the rest of the group. They meet once every week, and in addition to dancing they also support each other in different ways.
The dance group is within the “shoulder shaking” tradition (opposite to the “booty shaking” traditional dancers you also can find). They formed in the 1970 and has been performing ever since. Their interest is to promote culture and are therefore eager to both show and teach the traditional dances.
